Murkowski Welcomes Rural Water Funding for Alaska
Senator Leverages Top Interior Appropriations Position to Deliver for Rural Infrastructure, Health
Senator Lisa Murkowski – as Ranking Republican on the Interior Appropriations Committee – today shared news with Alaskans that $10 million in funds she successfully was able to include in the FY2014 Interior Appropriations Bill for the EPA's Alaska Native Villages program was released by the agency to provide grants to implement critical wastewater and drinking water projects for Alaska Natives.
“When I work with my Senate colleagues from the lower 48 on basic infrastructure needs, they are envisioning repaving existing roads and highways or making improvements to sewer systems, but in hundreds of Alaska villages we are still seeking the first such projects, so this investment is a key step in delivering drinking water and healthier lives to Alaskans in our state’s most rural areas,” said Murkowski. “In too many pockets of our state, the honeybucket remains a way of life. I am pleased to be able to produce results that have such tangible benefits to improve the quality of life in Alaska.”
