Murkowski Welcomes Renewable Energy Grants for Alaska Projects
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, today announced the awarding of $178,000 in U.S. Forest Service grants for renewable energy projects to the Chilkoot Indian Association and the Ketchikan Gateway Borough.
The Woody Biomass Utilization Grants encourages the clearing of dead trees and other potential forest fire fuel from national forest lands to create renewable energy for heating and electricity, and protect communities and critical infrastructure from wildfires.
Under the program, the Chilkoot Indian Association in Haines will receive $35,000, and the Ketchikan Gateway Borough will receive $143,363.
The awardees will use funds from the Woody Biomass Utilization Grant program to fund design, permitting and cost analysis of their individual wood-to-energy projects. The Alaska recipients were among 10 applicants selected to receive the 2013 Woody Biomass Utilization Grants.
