Murkowski Votes to Extend Alaskans’ Payroll Tax Holiday
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Murkowski today voted to extend the current payroll tax holiday for all Americans in a Republican-sponsored measure, while voting against the approach presented in an opposing vote. She had the following statement after casting her vote:
“When I conducted an informal survey during my economic tele-town hall last month, I found 80% of Alaskans responding indicated they plan to spend less this Christmas than just last year. Alaskans are feeling an economic pinch like the rest of the country. Given the economic realities so many are facing, I support extending the current payroll tax holiday.
“I am frustrated, however, that we have yet to find a bipartisan solution for the country on this issue – as we did with the Veterans Jobs Bill two weeks ago.
“I remain hopeful that we will come together in the next few days to find a compromise on this and other important provisions, like the state and local sales tax deduction, the research and development tax credit and other provisions that are set to expire at the end of the year. We don’t want New Year’s Eve to ring in a set of new expenses for America.”
