Murkowski Votes for Secretary of Defense Nominee Ashton Carter

Senator Appreciative of Candidate’s Intelligence, Alaskan Awareness

Senator Lisa Murkowski today voted in support of Dr. Ashton Carter’s nomination to be America’s next Secretary of Defense, discussing her decision afterwards, saying:

“When I met with Dr. Ashton Carter yesterday, two things became clear: he is an intelligent, capable candidate to oversee the Pentagon; but more importantly he understands the strategic and tactical value of Alaska to our national security. His intellectual breadth and judgment are incredibly important as we deal with a complex, volatile world with no easy answers.  Dr. Carter has my support, but I hope he will have the support and ear of the President in crafting a more assertive American role in the world, instead of the President’s inner circle that has reinforced his troubling foreign policy.

“I thank Dr. Carter for visiting me to discuss Alaska’s global position and military personnel, and I look forward to hosting him in Alaska.”

Dr. Carter’s nomination was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in a vote of 93-5.
