Murkowski Receives Panetta Institute’s Jefferson-Lincoln Awa
U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) received the coveted Panetta Institute 2016 Jefferson-Lincoln Award, to honor her “outstanding stewardship of our democracy through dedicated, responsible, and bipartisan leadership.” The award was conferred by the Panetta Institute for Public Policy, located at California State University Monterey Bay.
“I am so humbled to be given this honor for my bipartisan leadership and long career in public service. I have always had the belief that there is no limit to what we can accomplish when we work together, focus on building partnerships, and find solutions in our differences instead of allowing differences to separate us,” said Senator Murkowski upon receiving the award. “When I first joined public office, I made a commitment that I would work with anyone to get things done in Congress. That is what it truly means to legislate. I will cherish this award and the responsibility that comes with it.”
The Panetta Institute was founded by the Honorable Leon Panetta who during his long career in public service served in the House of Representatives, as Director of the Office of Management and Budget and White House Chief of Staff under President Clinton, and as CIA Director and subsequently Secretary of Defense to President Obama. Early in his career, Panetta served in the Nixon administration as assistant to Health, Education and Welfare Secretary Robert Finch.
Also honored this year were U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-DE), Congressman Sam Farr (D-CA), terrorism expert Fran Townsend and former FBI Director Robert Mueller III.
