Murkowski Praises Coast Guard for Efforts to Assist Nome
Senator Discusses Year-End Plan with Commandant, Lauds Support
WASHINGTON, D.C. –Senator Murkowski today spoke with Commandant of the United States Coast Guard Admiral Papp, discussing a number of plans to cut through an ice block off the Nome coast and allow the remaining winter’s supply of heating oil and other petroleum products to arrive in the region by year’s end.
“Admiral Papp and the Coast Guard are working on overcoming a host of logistical hurdles to help Nome find a way forward,” said Murkowski. “I appreciate his determination and insistence on building a plan to bring a Christmas present to the Seward Peninsula region – especially because it means his crew may sacrifice their holidays to give Alaskans a merrier Christmas.”
Last week, Senator Murkowski wrote a letter of appreciation to Admiral Papp for all the Coast Guard’s work during last month’s immense storm, protecting Alaskan lives and property. She closed her letter with a request of Papp to make use of the USCGC Healy to help the region get the fuel needed for the upcoming winter.
“Our vast coastline is not the reason Alaska has a special relationship with the Coast Guard,” said Murkowski. “Our relationship with the Coast Guard is strong because we both see our waters as our livelihoods and place a high priority on their well-being.”
