Murkowski Names Tourism Aide
Senator: “We Want People to Look ‘North to the Future’ for Vacation Plans”
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Lisa Murkowski today named Miles Baker – former Alaska Legislature aide, a current member of her Washington, D.C. staff – her U.S. Senate legislative assistant for tourism. Raised in Alaska, Baker will now assist Senator Murkowski on tourism-related matters, in addition to his current responsibilities on economic policy.
“Alaska offers the world a one-of-a-kind combination of breathtaking beauty, wildlife and down-to-earth hosts, and I want to make sure that every possible base is covered from a policy angle,” said Murkowski. “Tourism is a globally-competitive business, and we need to be able to provide policy that welcomes visitors and grows the industry. As much as possible, we want people to look ‘North to the Future’ for their vacation plans.”
Nearly 2 million visitors travel to Alaska every year. The travel sector of Alaska’s economy provides $3.4 billion in direct and indirect spending, $200 million in state and local tax revenues – and about 40,000 jobs for Alaskans.
