Murkowski Meets with Coast Guard Commandant Nominee Paul Zukunft
Senator: Admiral Z’s Arctic and Pacific Awareness Will Be Key for Alaskans
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Lisa Murkowski today met with Vice Admiral Paul F. Zukunft of the United States Coast Guard to discuss America’s Arctic future, icebreakers and his pending nomination to be the 25th Commandant of the Coast Guard. Zukunft is the current Pacific Area Commander for the United States Coast Guard and made the visit to Murkowski’s Capitol Hill office given her lead role in Arctic issues and committed advocate for the Coast Guard.
“It was great to meet with Vice Admiral Zukunft this afternoon and discuss this new and exciting role he has been nominated for. The role of Commandant for the USCG is a big responsibility, and after getting to know him better, it’s a role that ‘Admiral Z’ will execute well,” said Murkowski.
“His passion for the development of the Coast Guard will be a great asset as he takes on this new challenge, especially given the fact that the Homeland Security Secretary told me that recapitalizing the Coast Guard is a priority of his. His familiarity with the Pacific and his clear awareness of the Coast Guard’s key role in the Arctic will be great for the nation as a whole and I look forward to working with him in the future.”
