Murkowski Disappointed That TSA Caved to PETA Pressure
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, today expressed disappointment that the Transportation Security Administration has cancelled its planned recruitment efforts at the 2011 Iditarod Sled Dog Race due to pressure from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
In a letter to TSA Administrator John S. Pistole, Murkowski said the Iditarod captures “the spirit of Alaska and our State’s rich history,” and urged Pistole to reconsider the agency’s decision.
Murkowski wrote: “Despite what PETA says, the Iditarod is a race for animal lovers. Together, man and dog are pitted against nature and the raw elements of the Last Frontier. The dogs get top of the line veterinary care before, during and after the race. The mushers are required to carry dog-care diaries that are presented at each checkpoint as the dogs undergo veterinary examinations. Because of the stellar care given to these dogs, they are able to do what they are born to do, what they are bred to do, what they love to do: run.”
