Murkowski Congratulates New President of Alyeska Pipeline Service Co.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, today strongly welcomed the selection of retired U.S. Coast Guard Vice Admiral Thomas J. Barrett as the new president of Alyeska Pipeline Service Co., the organization that operates the Trans-Alaska oil pipeline.

Murkowski, ranking member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, said she could think of no one more qualified to lead Alyeska through the future challenges of operating and maintaining the 33-year-old pipeline that supplies America with more than 10 percent of its daily domestic oil production.

“Admiral Barrett, through a distinguished career in the U.S. Coast Guard, and more recently as Deputy Secretary of Transportation and the first administrator of the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, has shown unmatched ability and dedication to manage complex energy transportation systems both safely and professionally. He is an outstanding choice to take over leadership at Alyeska. He understands the environmental and safety issues involved in oil transport and has a deep commitment to protecting the beauty and environment of his adopted state,” Murkowski said.

Vice Admiral Barrett is currently the deputy federal coordinator in the Office of the Federal Coordinator for Alaska Natural Gas Transportation Projects.
