Murkowski Comments on President Trump’s Education Executive Order
EO Will Maintain Local Control in Education
U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) issued the following statement after President Trump signed the Executive Order Enforcing Statutory Prohibitions on Federal Control of Education.
“I was pleased to see that President Trump directed Education Secretary DeVos to review all regulations, guidance and documents issued by the Department to ensure they comply with the federal prohibitions against federal control of our schools. The Every Student Succeeds Act returned state and local control of our schools and our children's education to Alaskans after over a decade of Washington, D.C. based one-size-fits-nobody edicts. Since then, stakeholders from across the state have worked hard to implement Alaskans' vision for how our schools can best serve young Alaskans. I am pleased President Trump has reiterated the importance of their work and look forward to seeing the results of the Department's review.”
Background: Senator Murkowski had a major hand in drafting the Every Students Succeeds Act (ESSA), the overhaul of the No Child Left Behind Act. ESSA became law in December 2015.
Murkowski is a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee
