Murkowski Comments on Deficit Commission’s Report

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, made the following comments about today’s release of the President’s deficit commission final report:

“I commend those involved with the commission for the difficult task they undertook. Although I will be reviewing the report in greater detail, the commission’s proposal is clearly a positive step towards reducing the deficit, cutting out-of-control federal spending and reining in mushrooming entitlement costs, something that Congress has been loath to do.

“There are no easy answers, and the presidential panel’s report underscores that reality: spending cuts, increasing the Social Security retirement age and reforming the tax code are all recommendations guaranteed to trigger heated opposition. While these are difficult proposals contained in the commission’s report, our problems are even more difficult. But this is not a time for us to line up to protect our sacred cows. We need to review all options with the seriousness and thought with which they were offered and respect different perspectives. To continue our current spending trajectory, which is building a debt of epic proportions, puts an unsustainable burden on future generations of Americans.”
