Murkowski Bills to Improve Maternity Care and Enhance Communities Advance to Senate Floor
Recently, the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, of which U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) is a member, passed bills to strengthen quality of care, improve access to health services, and invest in our communities’ educational and cultural lives. The Improving Access to Maternity Care Act and the Museum and Library Services Act of 2018, both introduced by Senator Murkowski alongside colleagues on the HELP Committee, were reported favorably out of the committee for consideration by the full Senate. The committee also passed the BOLD Infrastructure for Alzheimer’s Act, of which Senator Murkowski is a cosponsor, to ensure early detection and improve overall care and support for those impacted by this devastating disease.

“Across Alaska and the nation we’ve got a shortage of maternity care professionals, which no doubt, has a significant impact of the overall access to and quality of care we’re able to provide Alaskan women—particularly those in rural communities. In fact, in the U.S. around one million babies are being born to mothers who didn’t receive adequate prenatal care, each year. This is unacceptable.” said Senator Murkowski. “By improving access to maternity care, this legislation can help reduce Alaska’s devastatingly high rate of FASD, and lead to healthier pregnancies and ultimately healthier Alaskan families. I am happy to support this bill that directs much-needed resources to where they are most needed in rural Alaska.”
MUSEUM AND LIBRARY SERVICES ACT OF 2018

“I have long been an advocate for libraries and museums. They are our communities’ hubs and gathering places, places of knowledge and opportunity. The Museum and Library Services Act will help to strengthen the already amazing, diverse libraries and museums across Alaska and help them serve the changing needs of their communities in ever-more innovative ways.” said Senator Murkowski. “I am grateful that suggestions from Alaska’s library and museum community were incorporated and that the bill adds a number of provisions to support tribal libraries and museums.”
