Murkowski Appreciates “Thoughtful” Postal Service Decision
Senator Responds to News That USPS Will Not Close or Consolidate Any Post Offices for Five Months
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Earlier today, the United States Post Office announced it has agreed to delay closing or consolidating any Post Office or mail processing facility until May 15, 2012. Senator Murkowski had the following reaction upon hearing the news:
“I’ve asked for two things from the United States Postal Service as it adapts to survive in a digital era: a thoughtful approach that considers up-to-date and accurate information and an awareness that Alaska’s geography is different from the lower 48’s. I am pleased that the USPS has heard my concerns, and the concerns of my colleagues. I hope this delay allows Congress to negotiate and pass a comprehensive, long-term solution for the postal service’s financial stability.”
The USPS is currently considering closing the post offices in Douglas and on Fort Wainwright, Eielson Air Force Base, and Elmendorf Air Force Base and the Postal Store in downtown Anchorage. Thirty-one very rural post offices originally on the list were removed from consideration.
“While the USPS receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, the agency must find ways to remain solvent. I understand that every expense must be rethought and re-evaluated, but every reality must be considered along the road to solvency.”
Senator Murkowski has co-sponsored the Protecting Rural Post Offices Act of 2011, written numerous letters to the Postmaster General and the USPS Inspector General, as well as launched an education campaign in Alaska and on Capitol Hill about Alaska’s unique postal needs.
