Murkowski Applauds Admiral Tom Ostebo’s Nomination to Key Nat’l Position
Friend to Alaska Nominated to be Deputy Commander for Mission Support
Senator Lisa Murkowski today responded to the White House nomination of Rear Admiral Tom Ostebo to be the Deputy Commandant for Mission Support of the United States Coast Guard, saying:
“Rear Admiral Ostebo’s nomination is great news for the United States and our national Arctic agenda. Knowing Tom well, I am sure he will step into the role of Deputy Commandant for Mission Control with a depth of knowledge after spending three years in Alaska’s tough conditions. It’s reassuring that his passion for Arctic issues will bring the conversation of the Coast Guard’s role in the Arctic to the decision-makers in Washington D.C. Having such a seasoned man enter this position is the right move and will really ensure coastal operations are executed well.
“Although Alaska is going to miss having such a great ally protecting our borders and marine life in the Arctic, it is with excitement we see him move onto such a great opportunity. As my friend, I congratulate him on the new opportunity and look forward to working with him in this new capacity.”
Since 2011, Rear Admiral Ostebo has served as the Commander, Coast Guard 17th District for all Coast Guard Operations throughout Alaska. The position he has been nominated for – the Deputy Commander for Mission Support (DCMS) of the USCG – is responsible for all facets of life-cycle management for Coast Guard assets, from acquisition through decommissioning. This includes ships, planes, buildings and information technology. DCMS is also responsible for the processes that grow and sustain Coast Guard personnel. The Coast Guard DCMS leads the 17,000 person DCMS organization, providing a single point of accountability to operational commanders.
