Murkowski Announces Appointment of Special Counsel

U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, today announced that Patrick J. McCormick III has returned to the staff of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, where he will serve as Special Counsel. McCormick will provide counsel and advocacy on matters within the committee’s jurisdiction especially as they bear on the security, adequacy, reliability, and affordability of the nation’s energy supply and delivery infrastructure.

“I’m very excited to have Pat back at the committee,” Murkowski said. “His expertise, tireless work ethic, and deep knowledge of energy and natural resource issues are particularly important as we work to rebuild our economy and address a number of long-term challenges.”

McCormick first joined the committee staff as Special Counsel in 2011. He was promoted to Republican Chief Counsel in 2013 and Chief Counsel in 2015. Prior to joining the committee staff, he spent more than 25 years in the energy sector in private law practice as a leading partner at two law firms, as a Deputy Assistant General Counsel of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and in the legal and government affairs functions of an electric utility. Since stepping down in 2018 as the committee’s Chief Counsel, he has served as Vice President, Regulatory for a prominent manufacturer of fuel cells, where he concentrated on energy and environmental regulatory matters.

“Chairman Murkowski has been a national leader for many years on energy and natural resource issues that have been at the center of my professional interest over the entire course of my career,” McCormick said. “It is an honor and a privilege to return to public service under her leadership and with the distinguished ENR committee staff. I look forward to assisting the committee in meeting the Chairman’s priorities for legislation and oversight in these challenging times.”

Murkowski is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
