Alaska Delegation Writes Defense Secretary Gates on Missile Defense

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Alaska’s congressional delegation today sent a letter to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates registering their concern about possible cuts to the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system at Fort Greely, Alaska.

The letter outlines the critical role of GMD in Alaska and its part in America’s national security, and asks Secretary Gates to discuss the future of the program with the delegation if there are going to be any changes to the GMD in the future.

The letter comes after recent comments from Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin of Michigan, who said the existing missile defense system has problems and needs more rigorous testing.
