Murkowski Votes Against Raising Debt Ceiling
WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, today issued the following statement on her vote against a $1.9 trillion increase in the debt ceiling:
"At a time when Alaskan families are cutting back on spending, Congress today voted to increase the nation's debt ceiling by an astounding $1.9 trillion dollars. Last night President Obama told the nation that we must get a handle on our debt, yet today's debt ceiling increase to $14.3 trillion is bigger than the last three debt ceiling increases combined. The last thing Congress should do is to make it easier for the federal government to increase its borrowing authority by nearly $2 trillion with countries such as China and Russia holding our debt. I could not in good conscience vote for such a massive increase in the debt without corresponding steps to address our nation's fiscal future."
