Alaska Delegation Announces Grants to Alaska Programs
Washington, D.C. - The Alaska Congressional Delegation is pleased to announce the following grants awarded to communities in the State of Alaska:
U.S. Department of Agriculture:
• $4,100 rural energy for America program grant to Laida Alpacas of Anchor Point. Funds will be used to purchase and install a small wind turbine renewable energy system.
• $4,800 to Klauder and Company Architects of Kenai. Funds will be used to purchase and install a small wind turbine renewable energy system.
• $4,800 to Ship Captain’s View of Homer. Funds will be used to purchase and install a small wind turbine renewable energy system.
• $20,000 rural energy for America program grant to Choggiung, Ltd. Funds will be used to assist farmers, ranchers and rural small businesses, in developing renewable energy systems and in making energy-efficiency improvements to their operations.
• $88,100 rural business enterprise grant to the University of Fairbanks, Bristol Bay Campus. Funds will be used to deliver technical assistance to rural small businesses in the form of energy conservation strategies, energy audits, and renewable energy conservation.
• $99,000 rural business enterprise grant to the Ketchikan Gateway Borough. Funds will be used to deliver technical assistance.
• $99,000 rural business enterprise grant to the Chilkoot Indian Association. Funds will be used to create a micro lending program.
• $230,053 rural business enterprise grant to the Central Council Tingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska. Funds will be used to support further efforts of the business center located in the cities of Angoon and Hydaburg.
U.S. Department of Education:
• $95,000 to the YWCA Anchorage to strengthen their Youth and Women’s Wellness Department’s after-school education programming, Girls Circle and Boy’s Council and the Young Women’s Leadership Council.
• $184,329.00 to the Southeast Island School District in Thorne Bay to establish or expand elementary and secondary school counseling programs.
U.S. Department of the Interior:
• $530,422.96 contract has been awarded to Northern Economics, Inc. (NEI) of Anchorage.
U.S. Department of Justice:
• $11,778 to the City of Homer. Funds will be used to purchase Simunitions kits and safety equipment to facilitate using Homer Police Department issued weapons for more realistic training, allowing the Homer Police Department to stay current in their abilities to respond to an active shooter or similar emergencies.
• $145,000 to the Alaska Innocence Project of Anchorage. Funds will be used by the Alaska Innocence Project to continue work screening claims of wrongful conviction and prosecuting those claims with merit.
• $1,350,000 to the Native Village of Kwinhagak. Funds will be used to hire a project director, cover travel costs for Bureau of Justice Assistance training and to purchase equipment, insurance, contracts and construction costs related to the construction of a new multi-purpose justice center.
U.S. Department of Transportation:
• $950,000 to the City of Gustavus . Funds will be used to construct a breakwater float adjacent to the Gustavus Causeway, to provide small boat mooring and protection from Icy Straight. Design has already been funded and is expected to be completed this fall or winter.
