Delegation Announces Grants to Alaska Programs
Washington, D.C. - The Alaska Congressional Delegation is pleased to announce the following grants awarded to communities in the State of Alaska:
Environmental Protection Agency
- $236,900 to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation to improve water quality in Alaska’s lakes, rivers and streams. Funds awarded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Corporation for National and Community Service
- $126,708 to Rural CAP to fund eight AmeriCorps Members who will engage, motivate, and educate youth and other volunteers to promote health and wellness in rural communities throughout Alaska.
U.S. Department of Agriculture
- $349,959 to Scientific Fishery Systems, Inc. in Anchorage for rural coastal Alaska fish waste conversion.
- $534,444 to the Native Village of Stevens Village to construct a new four-cell landfill site.
U.S. Department of Commerce
- $ 63,739 to Kawerak, Inc. of Nome to establish an economic development planning framework, process and strategy that supports private capital investment and job creation in the region.
- $ 63,739 to the Bristol Bay Native Association in Dillingham to establish an economic development planning framework, process and strategy that supports private capital investment and job creation in the region.
- $ 2,454,719 to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game for continued support to provide oversight of existing projects. These projects are: 1) investigating the recovery of Steller sea lion populations in Alaska; 2) harbor seal research in Alaska; 3) research on Arctic marine mammal species; and 4) overall grant administration. Common themes across the programs, include the following: 1) population assessment; 2) habitat use and movements; 3) life history; 4) dive behavior; 5) population structure; 6) diet; and 7) assessing health status.

- $265,373 to the Ahtna Heritage Foundation through the Alaska Native Education Program to support innovative projects that enhance the educational services provided to Alaska Native children and adults.

U.S. Department of Energy
- $262,969 to the Alaska State of Alaska to improve energy emergency preparedness. Funds awarded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
- $951,500 to the City of Unalaska to find an accessible commercial grade geothermal resource at Makushin and develop a 10 to 12 MW geothermal power plant (with the ability to expand to 20MW) for the City of Unalasaka Electrical Utility.
U.S. Department of the Interior
- $32,722 awarded to the Alaska Department of Natural Resources through the Coastal Impact Assistance Program to monitor the endangered Steller Sea Lion in the Bering Sea.
- $58,000 awarded to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game through the Coastal Impact Assistance Program to assess the risk of mining in the Stikine River.
U.S. Department of Transportation
- $486,750 awarded to Anchorage to develop an Airport Land reuse Plan for Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.
- $650,000 awarded to Cordova to rehabilitate runway lighting for the Merle K. (Mudhole) Smith Airport.
- $806,051 awarded to Kotzebue for improvements at Ralph Wien Memorial Airport.
- $3,450,666 awarded to Seldovia to construct a snow removal equipment building at the Seldovia Airport.
- $1,088,078 awarded to Seward Ship’s Drydock Inc. for shipyard improvements. Funds awarded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
- $4,658,125 awarded to the State of Alaska to acquire snow removal equipment in Bethel, Chenega Bay, Dillingham, False Pass, Iliamna, King Salmon, McGrath, Ouzinkie, Seward and Tuntutuliak.
- $1,502,523 awarded to Tuluksak to complete the construction of a replacement airport.
- $180,000 awarded to Willow to update the Airport Master Plan for the Willow Airport.
