Murkowski honored by NRECA
The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association has presented Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, with a distinguished service award for her leadership in support for rural electrification.
"Senator Murkowski is a true friend of electric cooperatives and a leader on energy issues," said Jo Emerson, chief executive officer of NRECA, who presented the award to Murkowski on Aug. 29. "Her bipartisan approach to solving some of our country's most difficult problems offers a bright spot in our nation's capital, while her steadfast focus on Alaska and its economy suggest a model to follow for public servants."
Meera Kohler, president and chief executive officer of the Alaska Village Electric Cooperative, and a NRECA board member, said Murkowski's record on the environment is significant and that Murkowski "has been one of the strongest voices probing the impact of the Environmental Protection Agency's aggressive air regulations on electric grid reliability."
Murkowski, the ranking member on the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, also won kudos from Marilyn Leland, executive director of the Alaska Power Association, who said the senator has worked hard for Alaska in her nearly 20 years in public service, bringing a common sense approach to energy and electricity issues. "She understands the value of reliable, affordable electric power and the need for a carefully balanced approach to regulation," Leland said.
The NRECA is a national service organization that represents the nation's more than 900 private, not-for-profit, consumer-owned electric cooperatives, which provide service to 42 million people in 47 states.
